The Power of Saying More With Less

I enjoyed, Smart Brevity: The Power of Saying More with Less by Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen, and Roy Schwartz (Sept 2022). The authors explain how to make your text engaging to others by being short and readable. They then give examples for applying the framework to email, meetings, speeches, presentations, social media, visuals, and management.

The key takeaways for me were to put your reader first and describe why what you are saying matters.

  • Use less than six word subject lines in email and newsletters

  • Pick one focus

  • Make it clear and specific

  • Imagine writing for one reader

  • Style your text for impact

As the authors state in the book, “Brevity is confidence, length is fear.”
