Learn About Others’ Experiences Through Story
Stories are a great way to better understand others’ experiences and learn about the world around us. As we near the end of Asian American and Pacific Islander month, consider reading books like Front Desk, which is based on author, Kelly Yang’s experiences.
In Front Desk, we experience the importance of family, community, and hard work as 5th grader Mia courageously navigates a number of challenging situations faced by immigrants.
At the end of the book, Kelly discusses how books and libraries changed her life.
She found solace in the school library during lunch where the librarians gave her books and discussed them with her. She mentions feeling smart in the library unlike in many of her classes. Because of the librarians’ support, Kelly was able to enter college early, at the age of 13, and then go to law school.
We often don’t realize how much our actions affect others.
What are you doing in the next few months to support others? What stories are you reading to help expand your experiences?
